International property measurement standard arrives

Up until this year, if you asked three surveying firms in different countries to measure a building of the same size, you might well have got three different measurements!

Crazy, right?

This is because measurement practices varied across regions and across different types of property.

2023 has seen the arrival of a single, shared international standard for property measurement.

The International Property Measurement Standards Coalition (IPMSC) brought together a committee of professionals covering the full range of property disciplines around the world.

Their mandate? To define measurement criteria to be used consistently on a worldwide basis and aid accurate comparison of properties across the world, whether they be office, residential, retail or industrial buildings.

Enter ‘IPMS All Buildings’: the standard which all surveying firms, Neon Surveys included, are now obliged to use to measure all types of buildings regardless of their use.

The adoption of this standard is likely to cause traditional surveying firms a bit of headache and result in their clients receiving a larger bill as the time spent on surveying increases.
